We recently told you about Rivet, a free reading app for kids developed by Area 120, Google's experimental product division. As the software is still in beta, it is continually improving with better features and interface enhancements. The application was originally designed for tablets because they offer a better experience and could not be installed on phones through the Play Store. The APK can still be loaded laterally on the handsets, but the interface does not look nice compared to larger screens. However, the application has just been updated and now officially supports smartphones.

Rivet now works well on most Android devices and offers over 1,500 free books for kids to practice reading. The user interface is child-friendly and does not require unnecessary buttons or menus. During the reading, the children can browse the pages and press any word to hear them. They can even get their definition and practice the pronunciation in a very intuitive way. In addition, parents can track their grandma's progress through activity email updates and view the history of studies in the app settings.

Rivet is a great way to teach kids to read, but also to use a mobile app without embarrassing menus and complex lists. As the software is still in beta, we expect to see more features and added books when the final release. In the meantime, it remains a very usable and ingenious application that we recommend to your little ones.

You can download Rivet on the Play Store or get it back on APK Mirror in case the first option would not work for you – I had to load the APK in a lateral way on my phone because I live in France .
