Media personality Rachel Lindsay, who was the first black star of “The Bachelor” franchise in 2017, has deleted her Instagram account due to the harassment and hatred she received from fans of the show.
Online harassment follows Lindsay’s “Extra” interview with “The Bachelor” host Chris Harrison, in which he defended current candidate Rachael Kirkconnell, who was criticized for resurfacing in photos of her at a pre-war plantation-themed fraternity ceremony. After apologizing, Harrison then announced that he was “stepping down” from the franchise for “a while,” prompting some fans to send hateful comments to Lindsay.
On Friday, Van Lathan, co-host of Lindsay’s “Higher Learning” podcast, posted an Instagram clip confirming Lindsay had deactivated her account and condemning the attacks.
“My ‘higher education’ co-host Rachel Lindsay turned off her Instagram account earlier today,” said Lathan. “She did it because it’s the hatred she feels from Bachelor fans, who spam her with all kinds of rude and hateful things to say.”
In his video, Lathan said people should “have an f —— life” and turn their anger away at Lindsay, when they should be outraged at Harrison for his defense of Kirkconnell.
“Rachel is not responsible for Chris Harrison, a 49-year-old man who cannot read the play at the moment of 2021,” he said. “She’s not responsible for this. It’s not her job to make excuses or provide cover for someone who doesn’t understand what the f — is triggering people in the world today. ‘hui. “
Representatives for Lindsay and Harrison did not immediately respond to Variety’s request for comment.
Former franchise candidates have shared their support for Lindsay following her social media disengagement.
