Rachel Maddow has opened The Rachel Maddow Show Wednesday by revealing to her audience why she was out on Monday and Tuesday. Maddow explained that while she and her 22-year-old partner, Susan Mikula, were at a minor league baseball game, Mikula noticed a mole on Maddow’s neck that had changed. Soon after, Maddow asked her longtime hairstylist about the mole, who said the same. So Maddow went to the dermatologist where she got the diagnosis.
“Long story short, Susan was right, Dianne was right,” Maddow said. “I went to the dermatologist, she said, ‘Hey, you know what? This mole has changed. I was like, ‘Yeah, I heard that.’ I took a biopsy, it turned out to be skin cancer.
Maddow had surgery to remove the cancer on Friday, which is why she was absent and said she was at peace at the moment.
“I had a few days off because I had surgery at NYU Langone on Friday. They are fantastic. They got it, they got it all, ”Maddow said. “I’m fine, I have clean margins and all that. Now I have to check everything eg every five minutes from now because I don’t want to start over. “
Maddow, who had a barely noticeable bandage on her neck and face, said she was feeling fine and doing very well. In fact, she felt like she could have gone to work the night of the operation.
“I’m going to be fine,” Maddow said. “I’m going to be fine, but that’s why I have a bandage. I’ve actually been feeling great since I had the surgery on Friday, in terms of how I was feeling, and pain levels and stuff. I could have come back right away. I could have been on the air Friday night. I didn’t because I didn’t want to bother you with the visual of me having the bandage on.
Maddow also urged others to get tested because skin cancer is highly curable, but only if caught early enough.
“Even skin cancers which are the deadliest skin cancers in this country, these too are much more treatable than before on one condition: that you catch them early,” Maddow said. “Even the most disturbing forms of skin cancer. If you identify it early enough, it is now quite treatable.
