Rachel Maddow got unusually personal on Thursday’s episode of her MSNBC show, explaining that her 20-year-old partner, Susan Mikula, is recovering from a case of COVID-19 that she thought ‘could kill her’ . Maddow begged viewers to reconsider their vacation plans in order to protect those they love.
“Whatever you do, however you calibrate the risk in your life, don’t get this thing. Do whatever you can to not get it, ”Maddow said from a remote location at the top of his show. “For Thanksgiving next week, you’re really going to have to have it at home, without people coming.” And, yeah, it’s gonna suck, but it’s gonna be so much less bad than you or someone in your family catching this and getting sick. Believe me.”
Maddow’s message was passed on to at least some of his viewers, who said they changed their plans after his outspoken message.
“Your plea that we think about the people we love brought me to my senses,” one person tweeted.

Another, actress and comedian Judy Gold, said she canceled a trip to New Orleans to see her son play his first basketball game of the season at Tulane University. She hasn’t seen him since June, she noted.
Some viewers explained that they’ve canceled trips before, but Maddow gave them confidence in their choice.

The November 19 show was Maddow’s first since November 6, as she quarantined herself, solo, away from Mikula.
“My relationship with Susan is the one thing, at the end of the day, that I would kill or die for without hesitation,” Maddow said. “And Susan has been sick with COVID for the past few weeks. At one point, we really thought there was a possibility it could kill her, and that’s why I left.
Maddow said she continued to test negative when in isolation.
“[Susan’s] not only was positive during this time, she became increasingly ill as I tried to take care of her while remaining physically separated from her, ”Maddow said. “And in the end, she will be fine. She is recovering. She’s still sick, but she’s going to be okay, and we’re not scared anymore like we were. But it really didn’t seem to be going well at first.
