When I read that Rage 2 was free this week on the Epic Games Store, my first thought was, “Doom Eternal? But it just came out last year!” My brain forgot that Rage 2 existed so deeply that it performed an autocorrect for a different sequel from Id Software.
That’s probably unfair, because apparently Id’s open-world collaboration with the developers of Just Cause Avalanche has paid off, and Rage 2 is a pretty good game. If you have an EGS account or are ready to create one , it’s probably worth considering.
Here’s what Matthew had to say about it when he played it in 2019, finding it to be a happy moment.
Rage 2 spanned the post-apocalyptic world of the first game in which most of the earth’s population was wiped out by an asteroid. You walk among the remains of humanity in a dune buggy, pulverizing enemies with a shotgun and following simple and satisfying quests. It’s not a revolutionary thing, but it does have Id Software’s attention to detail in terms of how shootybangs feel.
I didn’t play it on release because I was put off by its attempts at gonzo-style fiction, Mad Max / Borderlands. That could have been the first line of Matt’s largely positive review of Rage 2, in fact, which mentions Watson Whoopinkoff and Flitwick Mcdimbledick, two of the game’s NPCs. It looked like it wouldn’t be funny.
Now is it free? Suddenly, an average open world with an above average shotgun seems like a great way to spend ten hours. Pick it up from the Epic Games Store anytime by 4 p.m. February 25 if you feel the same way.
