The Las Vegas Raiders would have lost on Sunday without the efforts of underused cornerback Isaiah Johnson.
However, a day after fueling the Raiders’ 31-26 win at the Los Angeles Chargers, coach Jon Gruden indicated Johnson would remain a replacement, calling the 2019 fourth-round pick a “work in progress.”
Johnson, who was often injured, entered the game in the second quarter when starting cornerback Trayvon Mullen left with hamstring strain. Johnson made back-to-back games to save the game in the last two games of the game, including a touchdown that was called off following the final game review of the game.
Still, Gruden has made it clear that Mullen and rookie Damon Arnette, who is set to train this week and come out of the injured reserve, are his best cornerbacks.
“Well, we want Mullen to be healthy,” Gruden said Monday when asked if Johnson has gained more playing time.
“We think Arnette will be back on the training ground today. It was good to see Isaiah doing some plays. It’s still a work in progress, but it’s progressing. We’d also love to get (2020 fourth round pick) Amik Robertson a few more shots. Even though Isaiah played a few games at the end of the game, there is still some things to clean up.
Still, Johnson is an exciting prospect and if Mullen can’t come back this week expect Johnson to play a lot on Sunday against the Denver Broncos.
