Raiders’ Jon Gruden tries to avoid another Jets surprise

The Jets surprised the Raiders last year, beating them 34-3 to send their season into a spin.

Jon Gruden is ready to make sure that doesn’t happen again this Sunday.

“I don’t think I need to say much,” the Raiders coach said on a conference call Wednesday. “All you do is turn on the film, they followed us through all phases. I have a lot of respect for their coaching staff. [Defensive coordinator] Gregg Williams and [Adam] Gase has already given us problems. I don’t need to say much else.

Last year’s win over the Raiders was part of the Jets’ resurgence in the second half, with Sam Darnold throwing 315 yards and two touchdowns and running for another score – the kind of offense that has been sorely missed this year. Gruden pointed to the injuries and lack of offensive continuity that have hurt the Jets this season, but said he knows what Darnold is capable of.

“We compare the Jets to what we saw last year, they have followed us really well,” said Gruden. “We have a lot of respect for them.”

The 6-5 Raiders will enter MetLife Stadium after being awakened by the Falcons in a 43-6 loss.

Alex Lewis’s surprise bench against the Dolphins continues this week. The left guard did not train on Wednesday, but Gase was still unwilling to disclose the non-injury issue or predict if he would be active against the Raiders.

“I don’t have an update yet on where we are at,” Gase said.

Gase said Lewis always attended the meetings.

RT George Fant (knee / ankle) did not train on Wednesday after being out for the entire last week.

“I think he’s going to try to do things with strength and conditioning to see where he’s at,” Gase said.

LB Blake Cashman (hamstring), who played 12 shots on special teams on Sunday after missing the last three games, also hasn’t trained. OL Pat Elflein (shoulder), OL Connor McGovern (elbow) and WR Breshad Perriman (shoulder) were limited.

Gase did not look optimistic that goaltender Bradley McDougald, who has been injured in the reserve since Oct. 31 with a shoulder injury, would play again this year.

“I don’t see him coming back anytime soon,” he said.
