ALAMEDA, Calif. – The Oakland Raiders have recruited offensive lineman Richie Incognito, the team announced Tuesday.
Incognito has not played in the NFL since 2017, when he announced that he was retiring from the league. He said earlier this year that he was looking to return to football.
He had a workout with the Raiders earlier this month.
Incognito has played for the Buffalo Bills from 2015 to 2017, appearing in the Pro Bowl each season. The controversial guard was at the center of a 2013 investigation into the intimidation of former Miami Dolphins teammate Jonathan Martin, which resulted in a suspension for Incognito and his absence during the season 2014.
He also pleaded guilty last month to Scottsdale, Arizona, on a charge of disorderly conduct resulting from an arrest in August.
By signing Incognito, who will turn 36 on July 5, the Raiders will continue their method of acquiring talented veterans who polarize with a proof to prove. He joins a locker room that already contains catcher Antonio Brown and linebacker Vontaze Burfict. Incognito was named the dirtyest player in the league in a poll conducted in 2009 by Sporting News players.
The Raiders have put a point of honor in recruiting players who have what they describe as being of the highest quality, making it an intriguing mix.
Incognito, a four-time Pro Bowler, however, responds to a real and specific need of the left guard after Oakland traded the former All-Pro Kelechi Osemele to the New York Jets this season. An alleged offensive line of the Raiders would be LT Kolton Miller (6-foot-8, 328-pound), LG Incognito (6-3, 319), C Rodney Hudson (6-2, 300), RG Gabe Jackson (6-3, 335) ) and RT Trent Brown (6-8, 380).
The Raiders also announced that they had released the guard Chaz Green.
