Raiders sign wide receiver J.J. Nelson

ALAMEDA, California – The Oakland Raiders signed a contract with the unrestricted free agent WR J.J. Nelson, the club announced Friday.

Receiving 5 feet 10 inches and 160 pounds wide, Nelson enters his fifth year in the NFL. He made his Raider debut after spending his first four years with the Arizona Cardinals, having been selected by the club in the fifth round (159) of the 2015 NFL Draft. In his first four seasons, Nelson has Participated in 56 competitions in total and made 15 starts, totaling 81 receptions for 1,439 yards (17.8 average) and 10 touchdowns, while adding 12 attempts for 120 yards and an additional score. In two post-season appearances, Nelson caught three passes for 33 yards and three shots for 56 yards on the return.

Since entering the league in 2015, Nelson's passing yards average (17.8) has been the NFL's first among players with at least 80 receptions in that period. Of the 11 touchdowns in Nelson's career, five came from at least 30 yards, including three from over 50 yards.

Last season, Nelson played in 14 games and had two starts, totaling seven receptions for 64 yards. He competed in 16 competitions for the first time in 2017, while setting career highs in 2016 with 34 receptions for 568 yards, including six touchdown receptions, while adding four rush attempts for 83 yards and one score.

A native of Midfield, Alaska, Nelson played 46 games for UAB and made 22 starts. He finished his university career with 116 receptions for 2,273 yards and 20 touchdown receptions, adding 18 rush attempts for 90 yards and a score. He added 76 punt returns for 1,932 yards and five touchdowns, while placing 35 punt returns for 375 yards, including one for a point. Nelson ranks first in the school's history at 4,670 combined yards and his five career-time goals rank third in the annals of Conference USA history.
