“Yeah, it’s a relationship that started as soon as I got on the team,” Waller said. “Derek expressed his belief in me when I was playing scout cards when I got to the Raiders, telling me that I would be able to do great things. It’s just things like that that resonate, just being friends and having vulnerable conversations about life and things like that, it just turns into someone you don’t want to let go.
“With that connection, we’re able to have that dialogue where it’s like, ‘Okay, break that road here, not there.’ Coming at a certain point, we can have that dialogue together where it’s not, you know, he feels like he’s stepping on my toes or I feel like he’s stepping on his.
“We have this good dialogue and we work together,” Waller said. “Last year we didn’t allow the COVID excuses to take hold and we were throwing in parks all around, around Vegas, and we were getting down to business anyway.
