Mobile combination Gundam is popular around the world, but in its homeland of Japan, it’s practically a cultural institution. And although the original “universal century” Gundam framework tends to get the most attention, with spinoffs like 2015 Mobile Suit Gundam: Iron Blood Orphans are popular in their own right. Perhaps that’s why Bandai is celebrating the series’ fifth anniversary by launching a new line of bespoke clothing and accessories inspired by the show. [Thanks, Famitsu!].
Courtesy of the Bandai Apparel Division (the same people who brought the Kamen Rider clothing line), the Iron Blood Orphans 5th Anniversary Collection will be sold by Bandai Gundamclothing-centric boutique, STRICT-G and the Bandai Premium online store.
Items include Iron Blood OrphansThemed t-shirts, hoodies and other accessories like tote bags and pins. Rather than showcasing the merchandise with images of mechs or characters, the designs evoke the show more obliquely, through iconography and quotes. This could be a plus for a client who prefers to keep their fandom a little more low-key.
For example, although most of the items in the line feature the stylized fleur-de-lis logo of Tekkadan, the main group of Orphans with iron blood, a hooded design inspired by the McGillis character Fareed features nothing more than a candy-colored logo that says “Chocolate Guy”.
The design refers to McGillis’ first face-to-face meeting with series protagonist Mikazuki Augus. After narrowly avoiding a traffic accident involving Mikazuki’s friends, Fareed tries to catch up with the young teens with some candy. Mikazuki, who never remembers the names much, refers to Fareed as “The Chocolate Guy” for much of the upcoming series.
