The Los Angeles Rams had a slight advantage over the New Orleans Saints this week. After defeating the Carolina Panthers on the road Sunday afternoon, they were able to return to the West Coast and spend their Monday like another: in the movie theater, review their performance and identify areas for improvement.
Then the Rams' defensive backs rallied to watch their next opponent when the Saints hosted the Houston Texans on Monday night. And according to the Rams cornerback, Aqib Talib, they were as amused as anyone who listened to the thrilling kick of prime-time.
When quarterback Texans Deshaun Watson ran 75 meters in two games, towards the end of regulation time, to give the advantage to his team, the backs of the defensives burst. But Talib said the most powerful voice was Eric Weddle, a security veteran, who clocked the clock with 37 seconds to play.
"Too much time," Talib told Gary Klein of the Los Angeles Times, citing the Weddle explosion. And he was right. Brees moved the Saints out of their territory while expertly managing the clock, hitting wide receivers Ted Ginn Jr. and Michael Thomas for 15, 11 and 9-yard wins, with quick pics to stop the clock between two. The final result was an attempt to place Wil Lutz on the 40-yard Texans line just two seconds from the end. The 58-yard try went well, giving the Saints a win for opening week and Lutz a new goal on their career.
After seeing the smuggler go to the Hall of Fame to get to work, Talib and his teammates were barely surprised at what Brees did with this opportunity. "If we were able to place bets at that time, the whole room would probably have bet with Drew Brees," Talib told Klein. "I will not lie to you."
