Rams quarterbacks Jared Goff and John Wolford are expected to have an open competition for the starting position next season if both remain on the roster, according to Ian Rapoport of NFL Network.
Goff, 26, has been the Rams’ full-time starting quarterback for the past four years and led the team to a Super Bowl appearance during the 2018 season. Wolford, 25, is with the Rams in as a replacement since signing in April 2019.
Wolford made his first start in Los Angeles’ Week 17 victory over the Cardinals on January 9 as Goff recovered from thumb surgery. He was also named a starter in the wild card tour but came out early with a neck injury.
In his Week 17 win, Wolford recorded 231 passing yards and 56 rushing yards with an interception.
The Rams reportedly “liked what they saw” at Wolford during his time playing and liked what he showed at training camp, according to Rapoport.
As for a potential trade with Goff, Rams general manager Les Snead has left his options open.
“What I can say is Jared Goff is a Ram right now,” Snead said Tuesday. “It is far too early to speculate on the future. It’s a beautiful mystery.
Goff has recorded 45 total wins, including three in the playoffs, in his last four seasons with the Rams. This is the second most in the NFL behind Tom Brady (55). He is under contract until 2024.
