Rams’ Sean McVay waves on Jared Goff’s future as quarterback

Jared Goff’s future in Los Angeles was called into question on Saturday night after the Rams fell 32-18 to the Green Bay Packers and comments from coach Sean McVay after the game added to the mystery.

McVay has been clearly asked if Goff, who he named as a starter after John Wolford injured his neck in the wild card game against the Seattle Seahawks on January 9, was the Rams quarterback.

“Yeah, he’s the quarterback right now.”

It’s unclear if McVay was hinting at a possible change in the future. Goff’s contract makes cutting too expensive and he doesn’t have a high commercial value at the moment, so downgrading him to backup might be the likely option.

Goff’s performance in Saturday’s divisional round loss wasn’t that great – but it wasn’t enough to beat Aaron Rodgers, either.

He was 21 for 27 with 174 yards and a touchdown pass to Van Jefferson late in the second quarter, but the game slipped through after Cam Akers touchdown in the third quarter.

“My job is to win the game,” Goff said after the game. “I thought I did good things there, but my job is to win the game. There are no moral wins, especially in the playoffs.”

McVay and Goff didn’t see each other near the end of the season, with McVay choosing to start Wolford against the Seahawks over Goff, who believed he was healthy enough to play after thumb surgery.

“We are in a position to disagree,” Goff said at the time, trying to calm speculation. “We are two grown men who disagreed about the status of my thumb, it’s not the end of the world.”
