A lot of people, including ourselves, thought that Skyward Sword would never come to a console other than Wii because it would mess up the controls. We were wrong, but also, we were a little right too.
The new Switch version of Skyward Sword released last week (we liked it) with updated controls for gamers who don’t feel like swinging their arms around their living room. You can now use the staves to swing your sword, thank goodness, and that comes along with some minor gameplay changes, the most important of which is ‘Clean Cut’, the bamboo minigame.
The mini-game is located on one of the small islands around Skyloft, and he’s an absolute bastard. The idea is that you have to slice that big bamboo stalk at least 28 times, and if the bamboo hits the ground, it’s over – so your slices have to be very perfectly horizontal, which was quite difficult with the Wiimote.
Cutting the bamboo at least 28 times will earn you rare materials: a Blue Bird Feather, Goddess Plume, or Golden Skull, each of which can be used to upgrade items. It’s not Great hard to get 28, but it may or may not have involved accidentally dropping items on shelves and hitting your little brother in the face with the controller.
Now that players can use the sticks, the bamboo mini-game has been declawed. A player on Reddit made 46 hits while rotating the stick back and forth, while being careful not to accidentally trigger a spin attack. With each of the rare materials selling for 100 rupees, this is a good way to amass a nice sum in a relatively short time.
