Randy Pitchford says the context of its borders 3 Comment on microtransactions is "totally exonerating"

Gearbox revealed a ton of games played in Borderlands 3 on May 1st and, overall, the reception of fans was rather positive. However, there was a problem throughout the presentation when Gearbox CEO Randy Pitchford denied the presence of microtransactions in the game.

It turns out that there are actually microtransactions in Borderlands 3, although they only concern cosmetic objects. At first, Randy Pitchford criticized Game Informer for emphasizing it in one of their articles.

Yesterday, the boss of Gearbox argued in a series of tweets that the context of his commentary during the livestream is "totally exempt" from any claim that he voluntarily misinformed potential customers.

Did you watch it? I literally explained what we were doing literally a few seconds before mentioning microtransactions in the context of F2P tactics, which we do NOT do. GameInformer omitted the context and used words that led you to believe that I had lied. I do not have it.

There are tons of free cosmetics that are part of the game. That's what I was talking about at the time. When I mentioned microtransactions, it was clearly in the context of F2P tactics. Later, Sage talked about future DLC-type cosmetics at Borderlands 2. That's likely, not sure.

In addition, the context matters. The words I uttered just before the word "microtransactions", combined with the context of the earlier registration with the Borderlands games and the practices observed in the competitive securities industry, should, on the whole, be exonerating.

Please respect the context of the ten sentences preceding the sentence you are referring to as well as the history of the Borderlands franchise on this point. The sum of this context totally exempts any allegation of willful disinformation.

Sorry for any confusion. In the same breath, I said, "If you've already played at Borderlands, you'll feel right at home." This was to mark a commitment to following the traditions we've established. You can trust that – it's as solid as Earth.

As always, we will have to wait for the release of the game itself to understand the ubiquitous nature of these microtransactions. The game will soon be launched on PC (Epic Games Store), PlayStation 4 and Xbox One on September 13th.
