A fifth-year girl in South Carolina died Wednesday after being injured in a school brawl earlier in the week, officials said.

The child, identified by the Colleton County Coroner as Raniya Wright, 10, died Wednesday morning at the South Carolina Medical University.

She had been flown to Colleton Medical Center after being injured during a fight on Monday in her classroom at Forest Hills Elementary School in Walterboro, according to a statement from the Colleton County Sheriff's Office. Walterboro is about an hour northwest of Charleston.

The assault was under investigation, according to the sheriff's department.

"We are upset by this news and we want our communities to keep their thoughts and prayers with the student's family at that time," said the Colleton County School District in a statement. "CCSD leaders continue to focus on providing the necessary support services to our students, teachers, staff and community."

An earlier statement from the district had stated that school staff had "secured the premises, put an end to the fight and called the school emergency medical services" after the girl had been injured. Another student was suspended, the statement said.

The Colleton County School District cooperates with the Colleton County Sheriff's Office, according to the district.
