The student, Raniya Wright, died two days after being involved in a fight at Forest Hills Elementary School in Walterboro, officials from the Colleton County School District said.

"Raniya was a great student who loved writing, spending time with friends, playing basketball and being a big sister, and was actively involved in her church as a young usher," said the district. communicated.

"She will be sadly missed by her family, friends and the entire school community."

The student was airlifted to South Carolina's School of Medicine in Charleston after the fight, the district said in an earlier statement.

An incident report issued by the Colleton County Sheriff's Office reported that paramedics had found Wright unconscious as the school's nurse, reported CNN's subsidiary, WCIV. CNN contacted the Sheriff's department but did not receive an immediate response.
Colleton County Coroner Richard Harvey announced that an autopsy would be performed, according to the WCIV.

School officials have not published more details about the fight.

"Our entire school district is saddened by this event," said the district. "It is very difficult to live the death of a young person."

One student was suspended until an investigation into the incident was completed, school officials said.

It is not known if this student was involved in the fight.

Walterboro is a town of about 5,100 residents located about an hour drive west of Charleston.
