Ranking 7 of the best fast food fries, from McDonald's to Chick-fil-A and Arby's

Everyone agrees that there is no better fries than that of a fast food restaurant.

After all, they go perfectly with takeaways – hamburgers, nuggets and chicken sandwiches. Everyone seems to have a favorite fries. For some, this is the classic version of McDonald's, while others are geared towards natural fry like those of Five Guys.

For the national fries day, we decided to settle the debate. We fastened our seatbelts and traveled the city making several pit stops in restaurants with driving service. With greasy fingers and lots of napkins, we scrutinized the details of the fries: taste, texture and size.

First, the basic rules. We just had regular fries – no fries with chili or cheese, or sweet potato fries. In terms of locations, we have selected recognizable national chains with a presence in central Pennsylvania. (We will register the independent restaurants for another ranking.)

7. Wendy's

Wendy's is at the corner of potatoes, ranging from baked potatoes to a range of French fries such as chili fries and bacon fries. A few years ago, she introduced the natural fries to the skin with sea salt, which are now the standard fry of the chain. Knowing Wendy's commitment, you'll think they'll have a strong candidate. They correspond to the natural beak with some spots of real skin of potato. But the flavor has fallen flat. Unfortunately, we are in no hurry to return to the service at the wheel of Wendy. However, we will gladly take a Frosty.

6. Chick-wire-A

Chick-fil-A waffle fries are heavy for one reason: they are designed to be soaked. They are also a favorite of the sect with chicken sandwiches and milkshakes from the chain. The fries are cooked in canola oil and fried until they are crisp on the outside. But do we ask if the shape of the waffle is a real french fries? Chick-fil-A says that he uses potatoes grown in the state of Washington. Our fries were hot and mellow, but wowza was never salty. We could hardly finish a fry without having a drink. Unfortunately, our image of Chick-fil-A has been tarnished.

5. Burger King

Burger King is home to the Whopper and also sells sides such as onion rings and fries. The chain announces its fries as being "hot, thick and crispy". The fries cut thicker delivered – they had a taste quite similar to that of potatoes, but the interior texture was a little soft. If we had no choice, the Burger King fries is a decent choice, but not the best of the group.

4. Arby's

These are the golden bites, Arby's curly fries are one of those recognized favorites of fast food. Spiral cut fries are distinguished by their unique shape. They are also one of the only seasoned fries on our list and coated with an orange-y paste that gives a delicious and crisp coating. Take the Horsey sauce, stat.

3. McDonald's

McDonald's sets the bar for all fast food french fries. We do not know why, given the long list of ingredients he uses to make these crispy stems. What is dimethylpolysiloxane, anyway? BUT their fries are so good and we can not stop eating them. It's the fries we all grew up eating and loving. They are neither too thick nor too thin, with a slight crispness offset by a velvety interior. We will take an order or two to go with a Quarter Pounder, please.

Five Guys is so picky about his fries that he stacks sacks of potatoes inside the restaurants. The chain uses only potatoes from Idaho, grown north of the 42nd parallel. The French fries are cut by hand on the spot, then dipped in water (to remove the starch) and cooked with peanut oil. Five Guys fries are among the most expensive starters of fast food (over $ 4 for a regular cup), but they make up for you with a large portion. The fries taste and look like real potatoes, which we can not say for all the entries on this list. We strongly recommend that you soak them in ketchup or smear them with malt vinegar.

1. Hardee's

We never saw that coming. Hardee's fries were released from the fast food park. We are always stunned. Maybe we got into the service at the wheel at the right time and the right day. The fries in the chain do not claim to be a natural hybrid; just a standard fast food french fries. They were warm, perfectly salty and tender with an ideal crunchy ratio. In fact, they were slightly crisper than McDonald's French fries, giving Hardee's the edge in this showdown.
