Ranking Yankees first-round pick Trey Sweeney

[ad_1]

With their first selection in the 2021 MLB Draft, the Yankees took over eastern Illinois shortstop Trey Sweeney. New York seemed to be mostly tied to pitching ahead of the first round, but a number of interesting arms, such as Will Bednar and Gunnar Hoglund, were selected just ahead of them. Instead, the Yankees took a bat with their first pick for the fourth straight year.

Sweeney is a 6-foot-4, 200-pound left-handed swinger with good potential. He’s stepped on the boards this year, running an OPS of 1.234 with 14 home runs in 48 games this college season. Few scouts have brought in the 21-year-old as a first round in the year, but Sweeney did more than enough in 2021 to convince the Yankees to place him in 20th overall. Now, it wouldn’t be a rough draft if we didn’t assign grades up front! So what is your intuition? How do you rate the Yankees first?
