Rankings of the power of college football

[ad_1]

The first full weekend of the 2019 season is in the books and five consecutive days of college football have confirmed many of our preseason beliefs, while destroying the hopes and summer dreams of some fan bases across the country.

Six teams – Clemson, Alabama, Georgia, Oklahoma, Ohio State and LSU – seem to be the cream of the crop, at least after a week.

Auburn, Boise State and Wisconsin were among the big surprises.

The states of Florida, Missouri, Tennessee and UCLA were among the disappointments.

Here is the ESPN power ranking after week 1:

Tigers quarterback Trevor Lawrence struggled in defending national champion Clemson's first game by throwing two interceptions in a 52-14 loss to Georgia Tech. But CAC playoff MVP Travis Etienne picked up the heat and ran 12 times for 205 yards with three touchdowns. Remarkably, the Tigers averaged more yards on Etienne's runs (8.6) than Lawrence's passes (8.2) over the past two seasons, according to ESPN Stats & Information.

Even without linebacker Dylan Moses, who is out for the season due to a knee injury, Crimson Tide's defense seemed more dominant than ever in a 42-3 win over Duke in Atlanta. The Blue Devils had only 204 yards with 11 first tries and returned the ball three times. Linebackers Christian Harris and Shane Lee had six tackles in their career debut.

The Bulldogs lost their top six players in 2018 and quarterback Jake Fromm managed to score the ball in a 30-6 win at Vanderbilt. Six players captured two assists in Georgia's 14th consecutive victory over an Eastern SEC opponent, and Demetris Robertson and Matt Landers proved to be a major threat. New offensive coordinator James Coley used the same recipe, however, the Bulldogs ran 40 times for 323 yards with two touchdowns.

Following: Murray State (Saturday, 4 pm ET, ESPN2)

At least one myth was buried last weekend: Alabama's transfer, Jalen Hurts, is not throwing the ball well enough to flourish in the Lincoln Riley system. Hurts completed 20 of 23 passes for 332 yards with three touchdowns – all sixteen for 176 yards with three more points – in a 49-31 win over Houston. His 508 total yards are the fifth highest total in the history of the OU. Even more impressive: OU's defense, ranked last last in the defense against the FBS in 2018, allowed D & # 39; Eriq King, of Houston, to score 167 yards in new defensive coordinator Alex Grinch.

Transfer from Georgia The first game of Justin Fields at Ohio State went as planned, since he scored four touchdowns and another win in a 45-21 win over Florida Atlantic. Fields completed 18 of 25 passes for a total of 234 yards and led the Buckeyes to touchdowns for the first four possessions, before the OSU offense spread in the second half. Fields was extremely efficient when he had time in his pocket, completing 15 of 16 passes without pressure. He plans to get a much tougher test from the Cincinnati defense this week.

6. LSU (1-0)

The new Tigers offensive in haste-free rush was a sight that would please LSU fans who have long suffered from Georgia Southern's 55-3 defeat. Quarterback Joe Burrow completed 23 of 27 passes for 278 yards and five touchdowns, with nearly all of his first-half production. The Tigers scored 21 points in the first and second quarters each, after failing to score three touchdowns in 2018. The Tigers averaged only 3.7 yards per race, but the new pass coordinator, Joe Brady, kept some wrinkles for next week's trip. in Texas.

Following: Texas (Saturday, 7:30 pm ET, ABC)

The Longhorns had to replace eight defensive starters from the 10-4 team last season, and first results from coordinator Todd Orlando were encouraging for a 45-14 win over Louisiana Tech. The Longhorns were laundered for the first three quarters, imposed three turnovers (a pass penalty overturned a fourth round, a choice of six) and allowed only 73 rushing yards. It was a good start with LSU's big offensive in Austin next week for what could be the biggest non-conference match since the number 1 Ohio State played in 2006.

Following: LSU (Saturday, 7:30 pm ET, ABC)

The Wolverines' new offensive under Alabama's former assistant, Josh Gattis, was a mixture of 40-21 wins against Middle Tennessee. Michigan quarterback Shea Patterson completed 17 of 29 passes for 203 yards with three touchdowns, but missed twice. The Wolverines totaled 453 yards, but scored only 13 points in the second half, penalties and other misunderstandings against orders. Nevertheless, it was a good first step towards modernizing the offensive.

The Irish Fighting overcame a slow start to Louisville before winning a 35-17 win Monday night. The rebuilt defense of Notre Dame, which was to replace prominent linebackers, Te Coney and Drue Tranquill from 2018, showed signs of early growth, while the Cardinals ran over 200 yards. But the Irish took advantage of three turnovers to open a 14-point lead in the third quarter, and the Louisville defense had no answer for their strong running match. The Irish will have an extra week to correct their mistakes before facing home New Mexico on Sept. 14, which will be followed by a clash in Georgia next week.

Bo can come back. Aub NU first-year Bo Nix quarterback Bo Nix ran down the 26-yard Seth Williams pass with a nine-second delay to a 27-21 win over Oregon at Arlington, Ont. Texas. Nix, whose father, Patrick, played quarterback for the Tigers from 1992 to 1995, completed 13 of 31 passes for a 177-yard field goal with two touchdowns and two interceptions. Nix still has a long way to go, but Auburn's defense is good enough to keep the Tigers in the game as he gets comfortable and develops as a smuggler.

Texas A & M's defense looked much better in the opening game of the second season of Jimbo Fisher, who beat Texas 8-yard-15 in 41-7. After intercepting only seven assists in 13 games last season, the Aggies picked up four in their first game in 2019. That was the highest interception total for Texas A & M since 2006. The Aggies player should get a much more demanding test in the front row. Clemson next week. Texas A & M almost knocked out the Tigers before sinking 28-26 at College Station last season.

Following: in Clemson (Saturday, 3:30 pm ET, ABC)

12. Utah (1-0)

The Utah attack was pretty inconsistent in BYU's first game, but his defense was better held than in a 30-12 win, his ninth consecutive victory in the rivalry of Holy War. Francis Bernard scored 58 yards for a touchdown and Julian Blackmon got another six for the Utes, which forced three turnovers and kept the Cougars just 92 yards down. Zack Moss, who missed the last five games of 2018 due to a knee injury, totaled 187 yards with one point for Utes.

Following: Northern Illinois (Saturday, 1 pm ET, Pac-12 network)

The long wait for the transfer to Georgia, Jacob Eason, is over and he took advantage of the opportunity to win 47-14 over the FCS against East Washington. Eason, who had not played since the opening match in 2017 in Georgia, when he was injured and lost the starting position against Jake Fromm, completed 27 of his 36 passes for 349 yards with four touchdowns. A concern for the Huskies: All-America center Nick Harris injured his left knee in the first quarter and Henry Bainivalu is suspended for the first three games, according to coach Chris Petersen.

After beating Miami 24-20 two weeks ago, the Gators had a date open last weekend. They will play UT Martin FCS on Saturday, before playing two consecutive games in Kentucky on Sept. 14 and against Tennessee at home next week, which may well help to determine if they're going to challenge the team Georgia in the Eastern SEC. The Gators expect to consolidate their defensive statistics this week after totaling 10 bags against the Hurricanes.

Following: vs UT Martin (Saturday, 7:30 pm ET, ESPNU)

It would not be wise to read too much in the 79-7 rout of Idaho by Penn State, but the Nittany Lions have shown that they could be quick enough and athletic enough in defense to challenge Ohio. State and Michigan in the Big Ten East. The Nittany Lions limited the Vandals to only five first tries, four yards on 28 attempts and a total offense of 145 yards. Defensive end Junior Yetur Gross-Matos scored two half-sacks and three tackles.

Following: vs Buffalo (Saturday, 7:30 pm ET, FOX)

The Badgers overturned the USF, which was supposed to be better in 2019, thanks to a dominant defensive effort. Wisconsin running back Jonathan Savard had 135 yards on two touchdowns and two assists for 48 yards with two goals, beating the Bulls by 183-157 overall. The Bulls only managed nine first attempts and 26 rushing yards in 23 attempts. Wisconsin looked like the Big Ten West's first favorite.

Jonathan Taylor scored two touchdowns and scored two more as Wisconsin overtook South Florida.

17. UCF (1-0)

The Knights do not seem to be worried for the quarterback after losing the US Track Conference's twin-best-man, McKenzie Milton, following a serious knee injury. In fact, UCF coach Josh Heupel could have at least two options: Brandon Wimbush, a graduate of Notre Dame, and freshman, Dillion Gabriel, who attended the same high school as Milton in Hawaii. The quarterbacks were more than efficient in a 62-0 shutout against Florida, A & M Wimbush completed 12 of 23 passes for 168 yards with two touchdowns. Gabriel was 9-for-13 for 127 yards with three points.

18. Iowa (1-0)

The Hawkeyes took a slow start and found themselves behind Miami (Ohio) in the second quarter, before escaping with four touchdowns in the second half of a 38-14 win. Irish coach Kirk Ferentz is more worried: the health of left tackle Alaric Jackson, left in the first quarter due to a right knee injury. He went to the locker room with crutches and did not return to the sideline for the second period. He will be away for several weeks, but he will not need surgery. Jackson and junior Tristan Wirfs were expected to be among the best wrestlers in the FBS books.

Following: vs Rutgers (Saturday, 12h ET, FS1)

Orange led the FBS in forced turnover with 31 in 2018, which is a good reason why they won 10 games in a season for the first time since 2001. Syracuse imposed four turnovers to win 24 -0 on the FCS Liberty program, minus-4 yards rushing and allowed eight sacks. Now, Syracuse must eliminate its own mistakes, while new quarterback Tommy DeVito has launched two interceptions. DeVito completed 17 of 35 passes for 176 yards after replacing lead passer Eric Dungey.

The Cardinal won his 17-to-7 victory over the Northwest after losing quarter-star K. J. Costello late in the first half. Costello shot in the head while slipping – the shot did not result in a targeting penalty – and did not return. Without Costello, Stanford's offense did not score in the second half, but his defense limited the Wildcats to just 210 yards, forced four turnovers and recovered a fumble in the end zone for a touchdown. The status of Costello was not known immediately. The Cardinal played well with consecutive road games at USC and UCF and home games against Oregon and Washington in the next five weeks.

The Spartans' concerns after the first week of 2019 are similar to those of 2018, where they scored six points in three of their last four games in a 7-6 campaign. MSU's defense was dominant in a 28-7 win over Tulsa, holding the Golden Hurricane to under 73 rushing yards with six sacks, safety and a fumble recovery for a score. But after taking 73 yards for a touchdown on his initial possession, MSU's offense was no longer a thing of the past. The Spartans averaged only 2.7 yards per race; their halfbacks (Connor Heyward, The Darius Jefferson and Elijah Collins) averaged only 2.2 yards per attempt.

following: West Michigan (Saturday at 7:30 pm, New York time)

The Ducks were on the bad side of late Nix's heroic exploits for Auburn in Arlington, Texas, and they missed the opportunity to make a quick statement for the Pac-12. Quarterback Justin Herbert completed 28 of his 37 passes for a total of 242 yards with a touchdown, and Oregon's offensive line held up well against the much touted defensive front of the Tigers. But Oregon's mistakes have allowed Auburn to keep the score tight. The Ducks dropped a touchdown pass, missed a shot on goal and Herbert was beaten at training at Auburn 9. Management of the coaching game from Mario Cristobal's OU Was not excellent either; he burned two time-outs after Herbert suffered a minor knee injury.

Following: vs Nevada (Saturday, 19h30, PACN)

The Broncos quickly declared that their team was the best of a group of 5 with an impressive return of 18 points in a 36-31 win at Florida State. Real rookie quarterback Hank Bachmeier was manhandled in the first half by FSU's defense but had 407 yards with a touchdown. He was particularly good on the third run, completing 8 of 12 passes for 136 yards. Boise State's defense limited the Seminoles to only 99 rushing yards in 28 races. After the FSU scored its third and final touchdown to take a 31-13 lead late in the second quarter, the Seminoles had 46 yards on 32 games.

Following: against Marshall (Friday, 9 pm ET, ESPN2)

Cougars quarterback Anthony Gordon has only five assists as Gardner Minshew's replacement in 2018. You would not have known since the start of his career. He completed his first 15 passes and amassed 420 yards with five touchdowns before leaving in the third quarter of a 58-7 loss to New Mexico State. Gordon completed the receptions to nine receivers in the first period and was 330 yards at halftime. It was the third highest total in half for a Washington state quarterback; Connor Halliday was 337 against Cal in 2014 and Luke Falk was 335 in Arizona in 2015.

Following: North Colorado (Saturday, 5 pm ET)

Maybe Scott Frost 's Year 2 will not run as easily as many people thought. The Cornhuskers led South Alabama 14-7 at the half, and they put the Jaguars back only in a 35-21 win with two touchdowns and a new team score Special. Strategist Adrian Martinez completed 13 of 22 passes for 178 yards with an interception. The Nebraska attack was exceeded by 314-276 yards in total. The Cornhuskers had 66 yards in the second half and ran 44 times for 98 yards.
