Republicans on Thursday postponed the Senate Judiciary Committee’s vote on the nomination of Suffolk County Attorney Rachael Rollins to become Massachusetts’ next U.S. attorney for a week.
President Joe Biden appointed Rollins in July to serve as Supreme Federal Attorney in Massachusetts, which would bring her back to an office in which she worked as an assistant to the U.S. Attorney earlier in her career.
Eight prosecutors from the United States were on the judicial committee’s agenda for the first time Thursday, and seven were brought forward with a favorable recommendation.
“Significant prosecution experience. These candidates are well positioned to serve, ”said US Senator Dick Durbin, Democrat of Illinois and chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee.
Durbin said Rollins’ nomination would be postponed until next week at the request of the minority party.
US Senator Tom Cotton, Republican of Arkansas and a member of the committee, had previously threatened to block the nomination of Rollins for his phased approach to prosecution, including his decision to decline to prosecute certain low-intensity non-violent crimes.
Durbin said 85 candidates for the post of US attorney were dealt with by the Senate Judiciary Committee during the Trump administration, all of which were confirmed in a voice vote and only three were held for a week in of the committee after having figured on the agenda.
Rollins was the only nomination to take place on Thursday. Neither Cotton nor any other Republican commented on the decision to postpone the vote.
