Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart brings the PS5 to the service of extravagant new weapons, including new ways to make each weapon unique with detailed haptic feedback.
We told Insomniac Games about its upcoming PS5 exclusive series for our latest Big in 2021 projector, and you can’t talk about Ratchet & Clank without talking about its cartoonish gun lineup. Game Director Mike Daly told us how DualSense gives the team “powerful new tools to push each weapon’s unique personality even further.”
“Adaptive triggers not only give us another channel for weapons to feel unique, but in some cases they allow additional functionality,” Daly explained. “Partially pulling the trigger or feathering allows us to add nuance to the functions of the weapon that just weren’t possible before the trigger itself could give feedback. Burst pistol, for example, can be fired with precision by pulling the trigger up to an intermediate point or you can go through it to do everything at the expense of accuracy.
“It’s much more intuitive to have this secondary function right on the trigger than having players learn different buttons, it’s so much easier for you to get into the flow of combat and execute advanced strategies. without having to think about the controls. “
As another example, Insomniac found that gamers still do well at tracking haptic feedback even though there is a lot going on onscreen at once (which is pretty standard for the fast-paced combat of the Ratchet series), it is therefore perfect to use to indicate when slower guns are ready to fire again. Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart is set to release again in the first half of this year, so keep your DualSense charged until then.
