Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart is going to be an adventure like no other. Insomniac Games created this playground for interactive anarchy almost 20 years ago. Now the studio is embarking on the arduous process of pulling it apart at the seams, setting the stage for a dimension leap excursion that wouldn’t have been possible on any previous generation of PlayStation hardware. For new and old gamers, Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart will be a PS5 exclusive that you won’t want to miss in 2021.
“The premise is that our longtime heroes face an evil nemesis who uses a dimensional tunnel device known as the Sizer. As often happens in this type of scenario, it damages the fabric of space- time and our heroes will need to use an evolving arsenal of creative firepower in an attempt to save the universe, ”says Marcus Smith, Creative Director at Insomniac.“ We don’t want to give too much, but players’ jaws will hit the ground when they will find out that the butler did it … shoot, I’ve said too much. ”

If you don’t already have a PS5, you’ll want to have a DualSense controller in your hands ahead of the release of Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart in 2021. The game will take two areas of Insomniac’s expertise and elevate them into the next one. Generation: Insomniac’s penchant for crafting extravagant weapons and his ability to deliver best-in-class movement mechanics. You would have seen these skills in action in its incredibly diverse back catalog, from the Resistance trilogy to Sunset Overdrive, Marvel’s Spider-Man, and its 2016 reinvention of Ratchet & Clank’s first adventure – but Rift Apart works on a whole different level. level. .
“Since Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart was designed entirely for PS5, we have access to the widest range of techniques and the greatest loyalty we have ever had in developing weapons,” says game director Mike Daly . “You can expect new developments that make the impact of the weapon absolutely incredible: Adaptive triggers customized for each weapon that add new functions to the squeeze of the trigger itself, advanced visual effects that take the visual spectacle above, haptics to give each impact unique and physical sensations that allow weapons to express their personality, and our signature creativity for exotic and unexpected weapon concepts is in full swing. The weapon experience promises to be incredible. “
While many fan-favorite gadgets from Ratchet & Clank’s past arsenal will return, it’s the new weapons that steal the show. There’s the Shatterbomb, a concussive deployable that appears to be an upgrade from the Fusion grenade. The Topiary Sprinkler, a variation of Ratchet & Clank: Going Commando’s Miniturret Glove, shoots scoops of ice to freeze enemies in place as vines grow around the crowd control device to break up the invading Thugs-4-Less forces . Then there’s the new Burst Pistol and Enforcer Shotgun, two weapons designed to take full advantage of the unique abilities of the PS5.
“Weapons are always at the forefront of the Ratchet experience, and DualSense gives us powerful new tools to push each weapon’s unique personality even further.”
Mike Daly, Game Director
“Weapons are always at the forefront of the Ratchet experience, and DualSense gives us powerful new tools to push each weapon’s unique personality even further,” says Daly. “We combine haptics with the loudspeaker of the controller so that the physical aspect of a weapon’s shot is distinctly textured and believable. The expressiveness of the controller is very valuable here, as our weapons all look and feel very different from each other, so that wouldn’t be the case. It wouldn’t be nearly as convincing if all of them had a similar base rumble. “
This is an area of design that Insomniac has experimented with in the past with great success. In Sunset Overdrive, the studio used the Xbox One controller pulse triggers to ensure that each weapon had a different rumble rate when fired. In Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales, a dimensionality of feedback was introduced via the DualSense adaptive triggers so that you could feel the feel of Miles’ spidey sense rippling through your index fingers, as well as varying degrees of tension that correlated with how difficult to connect a web swing can be at one point.
Daly says the studio is building on that experience when designing the weapons for Rift Apart. “Adaptive triggers not only give us another channel for weapons to feel unique, but in some cases they allow additional functionality. By partially pulling the trigger or feathering it, it gives us a way to add nuance to weapon functions that just weren’t possible before. because the trigger itself could not give feedback. Our Burst pistol, for example, can be fired with precision by pulling the trigger to an intermediate point or you can fire to do everything at the expense of accuracy. It is much more intuitive to have this secondary function directly on the trigger for players to learn different buttons. It’s so much easier for you to get into the flow of combat and execute advanced strategies without having to think about the controls. “
An intergalactic adventure
Insomniac takes advantage of the PS5 to build a real intergalactic adventure. The SSD will be used to project players between new worlds (and new versions of old favorites, as we may have glimpsed Ardolis, Sargasso and Torren IV in the trailers) at near-instant speeds with no discernible loading screen, and for offer you new ways to browse its combat spaces and encounters. Daly thinks it’s this Rift Apart design quirk, working in tandem with the floating chaos the Ratchet & Clank series is known for, that will set her apart from anything the studio has created in the past.
“New abilities expand the way Ratchet can traverse dimensions using Rift Tethers and combine with a proven return move suite to create a set of moves that feels powerful and expressive,” he says of your ability to whip up combat spaces in a snapshot through dimensional portals littering combat spaces. “Ratchet’s core movement is faster and more responsive, with faster and smoother transitions from movement to movement, making Ratchet more agile than ever. allows players to be more creative in the way they move around the battlefield to outsmart enemies. “
Rift Apart is built to celebrate the Ratchet & Clank games that came before it. But it’s also a glimpse into Insomniac’s future, following its acquisition by Sony Interactive Entertainment. Smith says the studio is trying to cater to more gamers than ever before, noting that if you’ve never played a Ratchet & Clank game before, this is a great game to start with, as the adventure is a standalone storyline. . Still, longtime fans of the series will find deeper connections to previous games. “
Insomniac assures us that what we’ve seen of Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart so far is just a hint of the chaos this upcoming action platformer will deliver. “Insomniac is so out of control that many of our designers are sought after in multiple star groups,” Smith says with a laugh. “It has been an incredibly rewarding process to learn how to get rid of outdated ‘best practices’ that have been put in place due to load time constraints. While so often new hardware feels like an upgrade to visuals alone, working on the PS5 has been a paradigm shift in the way we do everything from near-instant level loading to 3D audio design, and yes, a huge leap forward in the visuals. It’s exciting to think that we’re still so early in the life cycle and everyone is just scratching the surface of what can be done. So excited to know it will only get crazier! “
Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart is one of our most anticipated games of the year, set to arrive in 2021 exclusively on PS5. For more on the bigger releases on the near horizon, check out our Big in 2021 coverage hub as it’s updated throughout January.
