The Baltimore Ravens must reduce their roster to 80 players by Tuesday, Aug. 24 at 4 p.m. EST. On Monday, they took action in this direction, releasing three players while placing another on the injured reserve.
We have placed LB LJ Fort in the casualty reserve.
We released DB Jordan Richards, T Andre Smith, and WR Michael Dereus.

The decision to put Fort on the injured list was expected, as after Monday’s practice head coach John Harbaugh confirmed the linebacker tore his ACL in Baltimore’s 20-3 pre-season win over the Panthers. Its loss is significant for the Ravens’ defensive and special units.
Dereus was brought in as Baltimore struggled with a plethora of wide receiver injuries. While many spreaders still haven’t returned to training, some appear close, so Dereus was let go after failing to appear on the box score in one of the Ravens’ 2021 preseason wins.
Richards was added midway through the 2019 season and played a key role on special teams during his two years in Baltimore. However, with the emergence of so many young defensive backs, there simply wasn’t enough room to keep Richards around.
Smith was signed by the Ravens ahead of their playoff game against the Tennessee Titans in the 2019-20 season. He then retired from the 2020 season and was in the roster bubble for 2021 training camp. After watching him at length during the preseason, Baltimore decided to leave the former top 10. .
The Ravens will have to take another step forward before Tuesday’s deadline to reduce their roster to the required 80 players.
