Ravens subdue Gus Edwards and two other free agents

The Ravens have called on three free agents: running back Gus Edwards, center Trystan Colon-Castillo and linebacker Kristian Welch.

Edwards is a restricted free agent and one of the Ravens’ main running backs. General manager Eric DeCosta said on Tuesday the team is working on an extension.

“Gus will be part of the team, one way or another,” DeCosta said Tuesday. “We’re definitely going to get him an offer if we don’t get a long-term deal, but he’s a Raven. He’s played his ass this year, and he’s had a good season for us.”

Edwards, 25, has been very productive and consistent for the Ravens over the past three seasons. The bruised back averages 5.2 yards per carry and 717 yards per season. Last year he won six touchdowns, a career-high, and showed a bit more as a receiver.

Colon-Castillo and Welch are both exclusive rights free agents who joined the squad as undrafted rookies last year. Colon-Castillo started two games when Patrick Mekari was sidelined and played well. Welch appeared in 10 games and was an important part of the team’s special teams unit. He’s seen eight defensive shots, all in the regular season finale.
