AL Cy Young's reigning winner Blake Snell is announced on the list of injured at 10 days with a fractured toe. (Via Marc Topkin from Tampa Bay Times; connections at Twitter.) Law Emilio Pagan will take the spot open.
Fortunately, this news is much less disturbing than it seems at first sight, because Snell should miss only one departure. There is little doubt that the spokes will hold it longer than necessary to make sure of it, but that only seems to be a jolt.
Snell has been excellent so far in 2019 with 25 innings of 2.16 balls after registering an extension in the camp. He has an impressive average of 13.0 K / 9 against 1.4 BB / 9 in the new season, making him one of the first favorites to repeat as the best part of the consensus at AL.
Pagan, 27, will make his debut with the Tampa Bay organization after going major in the last two years with the Mariners and A's. He has an ERA of 3.85 in 112 1/3 MLB. Despite a promising mix of 9.5 K / 9 against 2.2 B / 9, Pagan was injured by the long ball (1.6 HR / 9). He launched six scoreless innings in four appearances to open the year at Triple-A. So it seems that it could be used in a multi-slew capability.
