This is CES 2021 – the very first virtual avatar of the biggest tech event to launch in 2021 and while most of us are excited about the influx of smart tech to improve our daily lives with the various gadgets, how can’t technology handle the bigger question here – how is the latest technology affecting / improving our covid infested world? 2021 is shaping up to be the year of solutions, with vaccines rolling out quickly, while realistically we know face masks aren’t going anywhere. Razer, the world’s leading brand of lifestyle accessories for gamers, delves into the world of face masks with the concept of “ the world’s smartest mask ” named Project Hazel.
The face mask design is a glossy, waterproof and scratch resistant shell that is transparent by design to allow lip reading, and is made from recycled plastic. So far, so good. The main attraction are the two circular “active ventilation” discs that sit on the sides of your mouth and hold the reusable N95 filters which give 95% filtration efficiency. These filters are detachable and rechargeable while giving the goggle a futuristic aesthetic that goes to match the gaming setup you have with the Chroma RGB LEDs. After all, every Instagram-worthy gaming setup is in visual sync with each other, why shouldn’t your mask be part of the new normal? While audiences are torn between ‘take my money now’ and calling this an ‘April Fool’s joke’, RGB has surely caught the public’s attention. Jokes aside, if this is a feature that helps people keep their goggles “on” wherever they are, I’m all for it. The rings can glow in any color you want, and the LEDs automatically detect and turn on in a low light setting to light up your face so you can always be seen talking. How useful this feature is, we’ll only know once we’ve actually tried it, but it sounds great in theory!
To add to the futuristic appeal of this mask, microphones and amplifiers are built into the fans that will project your voice through the mask (I wonder if I can modify this to sound like Bane, or even say I’m Batman with credibility!). Currently, the Razer team is working with THX sound engineers to balance the volume for optimal accessibility. Despite the technology it owns, Razer claims the mask provides a comfortable wearing experience – using silicone protection to create a seal around your mouth and nose. The mask also boasts of adjustable earrings to help with different face sizes. The mask comes with an equally bright, desktop-worthy wireless charging case that uses UV light to sterilize the mask while a mini display features icons – which they don’t represent. is not clear at the moment.
Razer’s story of displaying impressive concept art at CES that then turns into reality gives us hope this mask can come to life – given more modifications and certifications from the Food and Drug Administration, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention or Occupational Safety and Health. Administration. The mask is currently made for the masses, without variation in size or even tolerance for a beard. Razer was one of the few companies in the world that converted their manufacturing plants to create surgical masks and wished to make a commitment and donate a million surgical masks. So cross your fingers and hope that a realistic and inexpensive version of this mask arrives soon – after all, we all have cotton masks, but I’m quite sure that a more functional and aesthetic mask is something that we can all do.
