Never one to disappoint over crazy designs, Razer revealed a truly clever face shield at CES 2021. And with everything going on in the world, it might even be more appealing than its convertible gaming chair concept, “Project Brooklyn ”.
While the aesthetic isn’t a hit with everyone, before you make any rash judgments about these RGB-injected medical clothing, you should know that every part of the design has an important role to play – even the funky lighting.
The mask is an N95-grade surgical face covering made from recycled materials, which is part of Razer’s sustainability philosophy (see Razer and Conservation International collaboration for more information). To reduce the waste created by disposable masks, Razer’s mask uses replaceable and rechargeable disc-type fans. The carrying case for the mask also acts as a charging box and features a disinfectant UV light that promises to kill all bacteria.
The RGB lighting on the mask will indicate low power levels or let you know when your filter needs to be replaced, although you can turn the lights off if you prefer. The mask is also waterproof, scratch resistant and snug to the face with a silicone liner that forms a seal to prevent unwanted air flow. The tight fit will be a blessing for all eyeglass wearers, who may have seen the world through a haze for many months now, as it should prevent hot air from escaping upwards.
The smartest mask in the world
The clear design of the face panel has been deliberately included for better socialization and to help those who need lip reading for assisted communication. You no longer have to raise your eyebrows at the old lady in the supermarket to let her know you’re smiling (although she might be put off by the futuristic mask itself).
The mask also includes interior lights to gently illuminate your face in low light conditions, so you can still wear the mask effectively outside of daylight hours. Razer is also currently patenting its “ Razer Voiceamp technology, ” which prevents the mask seal from drowning out your voice by using a built-in mic and amplifier to give your voice crystal-clear clarity.
While the design has working prototypes, Razer has made it clear that Project Hazel is a work in progress and will continue to be optimized with the help of community feedback. There is currently no mention of when we can expect the mask to hit shelves or an estimated retail price, but if social media comments are anything to say, it could be a popular product. .
Razer dedicated a lot of manufacturing space in 2020 to help during the pandemic and donated one million disposable face masks to frontline workers to fight shortages. It has also released its own line of reusable cloth masks. Razer’s efforts to keep fans safe and healthy, therefore, shouldn’t come as a surprise, even though the cyberpunk-esque design has caused so much chatter online.
Project Hazel is extremely identifiable as a Razer product and is sure to be a hit with fans of techwear and streetwear fashion. Design may not be to everyone’s liking, but with such an uncertain future ahead of us, emerging concepts for more durable medical grade face masks may ease the transition to a ‘new normal’ a bit. ‘.
