The Seahawks may not have started running back Chris Carson in their Thursday night game against the Los Angeles Rams, and the reason given by head coach Pete Carroll was pretty telling.
Seahawks OC Shane Waldron plot to attack former team
Carson was deemed questionable for the Week 5 game at Lumen Field with a neck injury, and while Carroll has said Carson’s particular issue isn’t new, the news about it certainly is.
“He’s had kind of a long term, I guess that would be some sort of condition that he would be treated with, and sometimes it ignites and sometimes it doesn’t,” Carroll said Wednesday at a press conference, choosing not to. not disclose exactly what Carson’s condition is. “We tested him and had an MRI and all that stuff, and it’s no different than he has been. It’s just obviously on fire right now, so we have to see if it calms down. “
That last part is good news at least, but the new information about Carson’s state of health could be worrisome when it comes to his longevity as Seattle’s top running back.
Carson, 27, resigned with the Seahawks on a two-year, $ 10.43 million contract after the 2020 season, and injuries have played a big part in his career since Seattle picked him in the seventh round of the 2017 NFL Draft. A broken leg ended his rookie season in just four games, and while he ran over 1,000 yards in 2018 and 2019, his 2019 campaign was cut short due to injury at the hip of Week 16. He missed four games with a sprained foot last year, and in the 12 games he played he had less workload than in previous seasons after an injury. at the hip.
In 2021, Carson has 232 rushing yards and three touchdowns on 54 carries in Seattle’s first four games. He also has six receptions for 29 yards. He played a key role in a Week 1 victory over Indianapolis with 91 yards on 16 carries, and he had 80 yards on 12 carries in a Week 3 loss to Minnesota.
The Seahawks’ running game was sparked in a Week 4 victory last Sunday over the San Francisco 49ers, not by Carson, but rather by running back Alex Collins, who had 44 yards and a touchdown in 10 carries plus 34 receiving yards on two catches.
Full injury report
Seattle’s final injury report released on Wednesday was surprisingly clear, given Sunday’s short turnaround against the 49ers.
Rookie wide receiver Dee Eskridge remains out with a concussion suffered in Week 1, as expected, while running back Benson Mayowa is questionable with his own neck injury.
The best news for the Seahawks is that defensive end Carlos Dunlap is apparently able to play after suffering a toe injury on Sunday. On Monday’s Pete Carroll Show on 710 ESPN Seattle, Carroll didn’t look so optimistic that Dunlap would be able to play against the Rams.
“He’s got a sprained toe. Grass toes, classic fashion style, ”Carroll said at the time. “We have to see how he reacts. It’s going to be tough by Thursday night, but we’ll see.
The Seahawks could still get tight end Gerald Everett back from the reserve / COVID-19 roster in time to take on his former team as well. Carroll said Wednesday that Everett had “a chance” but needed another negative COVID test. Players who land on the COVID list need two negative PCR tests more than 24 hours apart to be allowed to play.
