Amnesia: Rebirth, the desert horror from Frictional Games, has just received a new free Adventure mode, removing potentially deadly monster encounters from the game, scares and darkness for those who wish to live its story without fear of fainting. .
Amnesia: Rebirth – the third game in the series, following on from Frictional’s 2010 original and A Machine for Pigs developed by Chinese Room – launched last year, taking players on a disturbing adventure through the Algerian desert in the 1930s.
Its story – centered on protagonist Tasi Trianon as she traverses the hostile expanse, piecing together fragments of her past – garnered much praise upon its release (Eurogamer critic Vikki Blake called it “subversion of ‘awesome horror’ and a story that ‘grabbed me until the credits rolled’), and the new Rebirth Adventure mode aims to make it more accessible to everyone.
Notably, the Adventure Mode goes considerably further than the largely similar Safe Mode that Frictional introduced in sci-fi horror SOMA in 2017. Like this post-launch addition, it removes all potentially fatal encounters with a monster, but also eliminates the heartbreaking sounds and visual effects that would normally impact Tasi’s fear levels.
Additionally, Rebirth’s environments – often incredibly dark in the original version, requiring a frequently fleeting light source to enter – have all been lit “to a point where you won’t have the same feeling of claustrophobia and worry, allowing you to explore freely without worrying about monsters or Tasi’s mental state. “
Frictional says that while the serious themes and baffling vibe of Amensia: Rebirth are retained, “the new mode is much more like an Indiana Jones-type adventure in places where it would otherwise be a horror experience.” Adventure mode isn’t all about subtraction; it also introduces a number of bonus puzzles designed to stimulate a sense of adventure and provide an experience more akin to a “true Lovecraftian mystery adventure novel”.
“We think anyone who likes a good story-driven adventure game will be happy with this new mode,” says Fredrik Olsson of Frictional. “Not everyone has a horror and we don’t want this to prevent people from living Tasi’s story.”
Amnesia’s new adventure mode: Rebirth is now available on PC and should arrive on PlayStation in “the next few weeks”. To accompany its arrival, the game is currently reduced by 40% on Steam, GOG and Epic Store. Those looking for extra scares can also purchase Frictional’s impressive back catalog for 80% off.
