Recall of hot pepperoni pouches, which may contain pieces of glass and plastic, according to USDA

Nestlé Prepared Foods is recalling more than 762,000 pounds of Hot Pockets pepperoni, the US Department of Agriculture’s Food Inspection and Safety Service has said.

The frozen stuffed sandwiches – shipped to retail stores nationwide – are being recalled because they “may be contaminated with foreign material, especially pieces of glass and hard plastic,” the USDA said Friday.

The problem was discovered when the company received four complaints from consumers about foreign material in hot pepperoni pouches, the department said. The company has received a report of a “minor mouth injury” associated with consuming the product, the USDA said.

The recall involves 54-ounce packages containing 12 “Nestlé Hot Pockets Brand Sandwiches: Premium Pepperoni made from Pork, Chicken and Beef, Garlic Pizza, Butter Crust”. The affected boxes have a “Best before February 2022” date and batch codes 0318544624, 0319544614, 0320544614 and 0321544614, the ministry said.

The boxes also bear the establishment number “EST. 7721A ”inside the USDA inspection mark.

“Consumers who have purchased this product are urged not to consume it,” the USDA said. “This product must be discarded or returned to the place of purchase.”
