Recall of pre-cut melons sold at Walmart, Target and other stores due to salmonella outbreak

(WDBJ7) – The CDC issued a food safety alert due to a recent salmonella outbreak caused by pre-cut melons distributed in 16 states.

Pre-cut melon sold at Whole Foods, Kroger, Target, Walmart, Trader Joe's and other stores is now voluntarily recalled due to the risk of salmonella contamination.

Nearly 100 people were declared sick after eating these pre-cut melons.

CDC officials advise people not to eat pre-cut melon sold under different brands in many stores. They also advise people not to eat, serve or sell products recalled pre-cut with watermelon, honeydew and cantaloupe, or mixed fruit with any of these melons.

Caito Foods LLC, the brand, recalled pre-cut products made from watermelon, honeydew, melon, cantaloupe and pre-cut fruit containing one of these melons, supplied at Caito Foods LLC in Indianapolis, Indiana.

According to the CDC, these products have been distributed in the following states: Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, West Virginia and Wisconsin.

The recalled pre-cut melons were packed in transparent double-shell plastic containers.
