Recap of American Idol: [Spoiler] Saved, eliminated – Results of the season 17

Everything comes with an expiration date, including the American idol coveted judges and the episode of Sunday marked their last opportunity to use it this season. Six singers stayed at the top of the two-hour event, but as we learned during last week's double elimination of Walker Burroughs and Alyssa Raghu, no one – not even one who judges like enough to be nicknamed – is never really safe.

The name of the game was "Woodstock & Showstoppers", which means that each finalist would sing a song performed at the 1969 Music Festival, followed by a second song of "an inspirational power" from his choice – the latter including a free coaching session with former Idol Lauren Daigle, now a Grammy candidate.

But before arriving at Sunday's results, describe each of the six best performances:

MADISON VANDENBURG (The piece of my heart by Janis Joplin) | Here is the thing about this performance: the notes were there, the energy was there and the confidence was off the charts. Really, it was one of VanDenburg's most impressive events of the season. She even followed the advice of Katy Perry last week and returned her damn hair! I'm just not sure it's the best song choice because the final product seemed slightly diluted without a Joplin approach. That said, it deserved more than Lionel Richie's insane remarks: "You're not that pretty face, darling. Talent is everywhere. "
Grade: B +

HARDY WOOL (Joe Cocker 'I do not need a doctor') | All my thoughts on Hardy's first performance this week could be copied and pasted from all the thoughts I've had about him all season. I agree with Luke Bryan that Hardy always chooses the right songs for his voice, but I'm still waiting for him to pick a song that does not bother me to tears. I appreciated Perry telling him to "scare" and force himself more, but his lukewarm reaction to his advice does not give me any reason to think that he will change his strategy at the end of the game.

JEREMIAH LLOYD HARMON ("Swing Low, Sweet Chariot" by Joan Baez) | I do not know who decided to dress Harmon as a circus chef tonight, but I'm not angry that they did it. In addition, I have nothing negative to say about the performance of Harmon, which combines everything we love so much with its characteristic style: a little piano playing, breathtaking vocals and a gospel flavor. "You may have taken a break from church, but the church is still in you," Katy tells him. I agree with this statement … I do not know why she chose to say it as if she was looking for someone after her lucky charms.

LACI KAYE BOOTH ("Love Someone" by Janis Joplin) | In contrast to VanDenburg's attempt to produce a Joplin classic earlier in the night, Booth's performance felt like she was at home on the Woodstock stage, with smoky voices like chocolate syrup on ice . Or maple syrup on pancakes. (Can you say I forgot to dine tonight?) Anyway, this song may not have shown Booth's impressive lineup, but this wonderful grunt has done overtime to fill the gaps of the show.
Grade: B +

ALEJANDRO ARANDA ("White Rabbit" by Jefferson Airplane) | The biggest and most pleasant surprise of the evening, Aranda brought a dramatic electronic touch to this catchy melody, creating something quite unique. His ability to make a song seems both timely and Timeless is what sets him apart from the rest of the pack, and his shrug-emoji attitude makes him impossible not to admire. It is. Just. So. Cool.
Grade: A- (Click here to watch!)

WADE COTA ("With a little help from my friends" by Joe Cocker) | "Perfect" is a word that I hesitate to pronounce with this show, but since Richie did it first, I repeat: I can not imagine a better song to combine with Cota's grunt. And if you told me that Cota was briefly possessed by Cocker's mind, I would not immediately reject your theory. (Cota said that he felt sick behind the scenes …)
Grade: A- (Click here to watch!)

MADISON VANDENBURG ("I Surrender" by Celine Dion) | I was pretty sure I heard more from the Dion catalog – household successes, at the very least – but I must admit that I am not very familiar with this particular ballad. I think it's a solid introduction to the song, reminding viewers how powerful VanDenburg's voice can be. I think her nerves prevented this performance from being really flawless, but it was really enough to keep her in the competition.
Grade: B + (Click here to watch!)

ALEJANDRO ARANDA ("Poison", an original song) | May God bless Aranda to keep this show interesting. The choice of interpreting one of his original songs as a "showstopper" was certainly a risk, but I did not doubt that it would be profitable. His beautiful voice and his talent as a guitarist left the judges speechless; Bryan practically prayed The United States must take into account how difficult it is to remove such a thing. And I share Perry's prophetic statement: "How wonderfully interesting it will be when we change American idol by winning American idol. "
Grade: A

LACI KAYE BOOTH (Journey's open arms) | Has anyone else been impressed when Booth revealed to Daigle that she had never taken any singing lessons? After seeing how much she learned during their rehearsal together, my head is spinning with possibilities. What we got tonight was a polite and lacied version of this karaoke standard and I really enjoyed it. As Richie noted, she stayed in her comfort zone tonight, which seemed to be helpful to her.
Grade: B + (Click here to watch!)

JEREMIAH LLOYD HARMON ("Somewhere" from West Side Story) | Harmon has been compared to this musical theater classic (at the Barbra Streisand) which has surpassed at all levels – even though the first notes of the beginning were not entirely original. The. The rest of the performance more than made up for that initial misstep, resulting in a powerful finish that left Richie "fascinated".
Grade: A- (Click here to watch!)

WADE COTA (Shawn James 'Through the Valley') | Cota claimed that his nerves had beaten him earlier at night (… did they?), But he remained calm, cool and accumulated thrills throughout this second performance – strong publicity for all that Cota sells. I also like the idea, as Perry suggested, that his voice is secretly 1000 years old. Between this and Cocker's ghost who owns it earlier in the night, there is a surprising amount of mythology involved in Idol.
Grade: A- (Click here to watch!)

HARDY WOOL ("Johnny B. Goode" by Chuck Berry) | I give Hardy a lot of nonsense for his boredom, so I feel the need to salute the progress he made in this last performance. I was engaged! I felt it! I think I might be – dare I say it – ready to party with a Hardy. Talent has never been a problem for Hardy. His problem has always been his inability to arouse enthusiasm and connect with the crowd. Problem (usually) solved!
Grade: B +

OK, place to the results … After the vote of America, the following four competitors were designated as being safe in the competition: Madison VanDenburg, Hardy Wool, Alejandro Aranda and Wade Cota.

That left Jeremiah Lloyd Harmon and Laci Kaye Booth on the block, their destiny now in the hands of the judges. Amazing, absolutely nobody, the judges chose to save … Booth! (Honestly, I'm a bit speechless, how did they let Harmon slip between their fingers ?!)

More videos of tonight's performances will be added as soon as they are available. At the same time, vote for the most impressive singer this week, then leave a comment with your thoughts: Has the right person been saved? And was the good returned to his home?
