JACKSONVILLE – The transition to the 2019 alignment continues.

The post-season transition from Jaguars to quarterback also continued on Thursday. Cody Kessler, starting quarterback at the end of four games late last season, was released the same day the team signed 21 free agents.

Kessler, who was bought in 2018 with the Clevelands Browns in the off-season for what would become a seventh-round draft pick in the NFL draft in 2019, started her 13-16 weeks last season. His release means that the two quarterbacks of the Jaguars last season are no longer part of the team. The Jaguars launched Blake Bortles, a long-time starter, in mid-March.

The release of Kessler leaves four quarters in the lineup: the starter Nick Foles, the 2016 selection of the sixth round Gardner Minshew, the selection of the sixth round 2018 Tanner Lee and the acquisition of the free agents of 2019 Alex McGough.

The Jaguars signed Foles as an unrestricted free agent in mid-March. Lee is now the only quarter on the list that was with the Jaguars last season.

The Jaguars also released linebacker Donald Payne, guard Parker Ehringer, halfback Dimitri Flowers, halfback David Williams and linebacker Blair Brown.

Brown, selected in the fifth round by the Jaguars in the 2017 NFL draft, played 28 games with two starts. Payne, acquired from Baltimore in 2017, has played 21 games in two seasons. Williams, who signed with the Denver training squad last season, has amassed 36 yards in eight races in six games with the Jaguars.

Flowers had originally signed a contract with the New York Jets as a free agent and had spent time in the Jaguars' training team last season. Ehringer, a fourth round pick by Kansas City in 2016, was claimed in Dallas in April.
