The Red Dead Redemption 2 player maps the various regions found in the game with their real-world counterparts in the western United States.
A game’s map can be one of the most important aspects of a title’s development and can determine everything from immersing the world to the type of experience players sign up for. In the case of Red Dead Redemption 2 and its predecessor, development at Rockstar Games, was fortunate enough to have the real United States to use as a model for the game’s Wild-West atmosphere.
While the real card of the game in Red Dead Redemption 2 isn’t exactly an individual recreation of the western states of America, much of the topography, climate, and wildlife can indicate the general relationship between game regions and actual locations. The map takes into account a number of locations found in the most recent prequel to Red Dead Redemption as well as New Austin and Nuevo Paraiso from the original. As most fans would expect, it places Saint Denis in New Orleans and Bayou Nwa in Louisiana, but the map goes so far as to identify actual areas of Big Valley and the Grizzlies. It shows how much exploration players in the game are meant to represent a large part of the United States, with much of the series taking place west of the Mississippi River.
Other fans were quick to point out several issues with this latest take on the map, however, pointing out that the placement of New Austin and Tall Trees was incorrect, among other things. On the one hand, New Austin has a lot more in common with Arizona, as this is where many Western films than the original. Red Dead Redemption draws inspiration from both the story and the setting. So this version of the map isn’t a perfect representation of the game’s regions compared to the actual locations, but it still shows exactly what part of the country the open world is supposed to represent.
Locate the exact locations of Red Dead Redemption 2 in the real world is difficult, considering how Rockstar had to condense huge parts of the country into a more manageable map. contrary to Grand Theft Auto, which recreates entire cities as the entire map, supporting multiple western states means there can’t really be an individual recreation of one location. It just goes to show how well the development of the map has gone that so many fans can identify the general region that each section is meant to represent based on the smallest details.
Red Dead Redemption 2 is now available for PC, PS4, Stadia, and Xbox One.
