A new Red Dead Redemption 2 leak can offer a big clue to the setting of GTA 6, the next entry in the Grand Theft Auto series that Rockstar Games has yet to announce, but which is reportedly in development for PS5, Xbox Series X, and possibly PC as well. On the GTA forums, a dataminer revealed some interesting pieces of code that they recently discovered while browsing the files of Red Dead Redemption 2. Specifically, they found files for various guns that not only were not red Dead Redemption 2, but weren’t even suitable for the open world western era, mostly 1899. At first glance, you’d assume these are leftover files from GTA 5, and it can be, but there is also a case where it could be for GTA 6, and reveals when the game can be set.
On the GTA forums, the user and dataminer “DerekLeet” noticed that there are several files for weapons that did not exist in 1899, but are not modern weapons either, apparently ruling out that they are. GTA 5 and GTA Online.
The first of these weapons is the Browning pistol, while the second is the L1AL rifle. AK47 was also found in the files of Red Dead Redemption 2, but unlike the other two, it could very well be leftover files GTA 5. That said, the AK47 has a different name in the GTA 5 files that here in the Red Dead Redemption 2 files, which casts doubt on the remains of the 2013 game.
There is a catch, though: these files have been in the game since launch. Of course, that begs the question: why would Rockstar Games use Red Dead Redemption 2 before releasing them to test the guns GTA 6?
Unfortunately, right now, this new leak, as is, creates more questions than it answers. That said, given that all of the guns mentioned above were all used in the 1900s, especially the second half of the century, this could reinforce rumors, reports and leaks claiming GTA 6 takes place in the 1980s Vice City.
At the time of publication, Rockstar Games has not commented on this leak in any capacity, and that is highly unlikely to change. However, if that’s the case, we’ll be sure to update the story with whatever is provided. In the meantime, take everything with a big grain of salt.
