The RED Hydrogen One was perhaps the most disappointing smartphone of 2018. There was a lot of hype around the devices because it had been created by one of the world's largest camera companies. Instead of a phone with an amazing camera, as most people were waiting for it, we had a very expensive phone with a mediocre camera and a strange 3D screen gadget. It now seems that one of the phone's selling points might never appear.

Like Moto Z devices from Motorola, the Hydrogen One has a data connector on the back for connecting accessories. RED said that it would create a battery and storage accessories, as well as a "cinema-grade camera module". As pointed out ReipasTietokonePoju, Reddit user, all the references to the phone modules have been removed from the website Hydrogen One. The original page can be viewed from the Internet archive.

Assuming that it is an intentional withdrawal (we contacted RED to confirm), it would not be unexpected. Hydrogen One has received mixed reviews during its launch, and although official sales figures are not available, it is probably safe to say that the phone did not sell in large quantities. It has not yet received Android 9 Pie.

Whatever the success of a product, promising an improvement that will ultimately be canceled is never acceptable. But unlike Motorola, RED may know when to stop on modular devices.
