The Red Sox have announced that they have reinstated the ace Chris Sale and closer Matt barnes from the list of injured COVID-19. Ryan brasier was optioned to Triple-A Worcester, while Happy Michel has been designated to be assigned to the free space of the list.
Sale and Barnes become the last two players to return after testing positive for the coronavirus. Getting a few more good starts down the home stretch would be essential for a Boston side coming into play tonight tied with the Blue Jays and holding a half-game advantage over rival Yankees for the two-spot Wild Card. of the American League.
Barnes missed a bit more time than Sale, as he tested positive on August 30. Those few weeks on the shelf forced him to make two minor league appearances this week before returning to the active roster. One of the league’s best first-half relievers, Barnes has had a disastrous August and will look to regain his early-season form down the stretch.
The Red Sox signed Feliz to a minor league contract in late August and selected him to the major league club a few weeks later. He made just four appearances for Boston, throwing 5 1/3 balls in two runs before losing his spot. The Red Sox will put the 28-year-old on waivers over the next few days.
Feliz has split the 2021 season between three teams, pitching for the Pirates and Reds in addition to his work with the Sox. He posted a 7.32 ERA in 19 2/3 innings between this trio of clubs despite strong strikeout and walk rates (25.3% and 6.9%, respectively). The opposing hitters hit four home runs on the flyball pitcher in that limited work.
