Boston Red Sox manager Alex Cora confirmed Sunday that he would not attend a White House ceremony commemorating the team's 2018 World Series championship, citing the re-establishment of Hurricane Maria in her harbor, Puerto Rico.
"The government has done some great things at home, but we still have a long way to go," Cora told reporters after Boston's 9-2 win over the Chicago White Sox. "It's our reality, it's quite difficult to go celebrate when we're here, I prefer not to go and be consistent with everything."
Cora, 43, who played for six teams in her 14-year career in the major leagues, had already suggested that she attend the ceremony and comment on the Trump administration's reaction to the catastrophe. However, he said Sunday that he had changed his mind after meeting with his family and friends.

Boston won 108 games in the regular season and defeated the New York Yankees, Houston Astros and Los Angeles Dodgers before winning the ninth world franchise championship, the fourth in 15 years. Cora became the first Puerto Rico-born coach to win the World Series title and the fifth to win a title in his first season as manager.
Sunday's win brought the Red Sox record to 17-18, five games into the first day of the AHL, the Tampa Bay Rays.
