A game between the Boston Red Sox and the New York Yankees ended briefly on Saturday after a Yankee Stadium fan threw a baseball at Red Sox outfielder Alex Verdugo.
Fox Sports captured the aftermath of the pitch, with a clearly angry Verdugo exchanging words with the Yankees crowd amid a downpour in New York City.
Red Sox manager Alex Cora responded to the situation by calling his players off the field. The players would return a few minutes later, but only after a heated discussion between Cora and referee Laz Diaz.
According to WFAN’s Sweeny Murti, a fan was identified and escorted out of the stadium in the process.
Verdugo was never shy when playing in front of Yankee fans, often exchanging trashy words in a good mood. This dynamic obviously changes when a fan throws an object at him, and is one more example of the bad behavior of fans in recent months in the sport.
The game would eventually resume, with the Yankees taking a 3-1 lead thanks to back-to-back homers from Gary Sanchez and Gleyber Torres. The Yankees won 3-1 in a rain-cut six innings.
