The Boston Red Sox should be in San Diego to enjoy a day off, but Mother Nature has had other ideas.
You'll remember that earlier in the month (August 7 to be exact), the Royals of Sox and Kansas City were playing the last episode of their three-game series at Fenway Park. However, it started to rain like crazy at the start of the 10th inning, forcing the match to be suspended. Thursday was the most logical option for the game, so the Royals returned to Boston after a series in Baltimore to close the game. It will resume at 1 pm AND, and you can watch the match on NESN.
It may take 15 minutes or three hours, but here is a reminder of the situation.
When the game resumes, he will be tied 4-4 in the middle of an at-bat at the top of the 10th. Meibrys Viloria scored 2-1 from Josh Taylor before the rain suspended the match, making it the exact starting point. Viloria is the first batter, so the basics are clear. Taylor threw a round in Tuesday's game, so he should be cool.
Now, they have been eligible for supplements, thanks in part to the Royals' comeback.
The two-point single from Viloria in the center of the third inning brought the KC to 2-0. But in the bottom of the fourth quarter, J.D. Martinez threw a two-point shot to center the tie, then Boston took a 4-2 lead in the fifth with a double from Xander Bogaerts. The Royals started retorting when Whit Merrifield scored a singles in sixth place to score a goal in one point space, then completed the comeback with Nicky Lopez's double in seventh place.
Kansas City has exhausted five pitchers (including their starter), while the Red Sox have used four (Eduardo Rodriguez, Darwinzon Hernandez, Nathan Eovaldi and Brandon Workman) – none of the previously used pitchers can return to the match. Neither team has gone on their bench, so all these players are available.
Another unique oddity: Since that game, the Royals have released center field player Billy Hamilton, who was to finish third at the start of the 10th inning. Because of this, the Royals are able to replace him with someone who is not yet in training.
It's an unusual thing, that's for sure, but a win would put the Red Sox 6 1/2 games on the wildcard second place, so they really need a win.
