The Boston Red Sox have acquired right-handed Andrew Cashner of the Baltimore Orioles in exchange for minor leagues Elio Prado and Noelberth Romero, the teams said Saturday.
Boston, who is looking for a starter with Nathan Eovaldi who has to get to work when he gets off the wounded list, has also received cash consideration in the contract.
Red Sox president Dave Dombrowski said Cashner would start Tuesday against the Toronto Blue Jays.
Cashner, 32, is 9-3 with a 3.83 ERA in 17 starts for the Orioles this season. It has been hot recently, posting a 1.41 EPM in five starts since the beginning of June.
"He is delighted to be here, looking forward to launching," Dombrowski said. "Pleased to join the club and happy to be part of the pennant race, as far as we love, he has thrown the ball well … as well as ever.
"This definitely gives us an improvement in this fifth place where we have been fighting for so long this year.We love a lot about him.We think he makes us better."
Cashner is 55-82 in 10 major league seasons with the Orioles, Rangers, Marlins, Padres and Cubs. He is in the last season of a $ 16 million contract over two years.
Baltimore agreed to send $ 1,777,839 to Boston to cover all of Cashner's $ 3,359,839, with the exception of $ 1,577,000, from his $ 8 million salary this year. Baltimore also agreed to make contingent payments on some of Cashner's performance bonuses if it realized them.
Dombrowski said the team was happy to take the initiative before the trade deadline.
"We think every game is important," said Dombrowski. "We really rushed to fifth place to get in. And that changes that at this point, we start a very important part of our schedule, it was important, we would not have an agreement that we would not have done it. " I think we have a good idea of which ones are available and which are not available at the moment.
"… We have 70 games to play, basically, giving us a chance to move immediately."
The Red Sox occupy third place in the eastern part of the AL, 8.5 days from the New York Yankees until Friday's meeting. They are also a return match in the AL joker rankings.
Starting Monday, over 15 days, Boston will play 14 games against the Yankees (8) and second place. Rays of Tampa Bay (6).
"We like the look of our club, but we love it for a long time," Dombrowski said. "I think we played better, we won five out of six victories, but we have to keep moving because we dug a hole in the division."
Romero and Prado, both 17 years old, made their professional debut in the Dominican summer league. Romero, a field player, beat .264 with two home runs in 29 games; Prado, a registered player, averaged .303 with nine interceptions and 26 points in 33 games.
