Red Sox without JD Martinez for Yankees showdown

BOSTON – An awkward trip to second base cost the Red Sox one of their best hitters for Tuesday’s American League wildcard game.

JD Martinez was ruled out for the Red Sox’s showdown against the Yankees at Fenway Park, two days after tripping over the sack while running to play right field in Game 162.

Martinez, the Red Sox regular DH, hit .286 with a record 42 doubles, 28 home runs and an .867 OPS during the regular season. The Yankees had his number in their regular-season series, however, limiting it to a slash line of 0.186 / 0.258 / .356 and two homers in 17 games.

“It just sucks. Weird injury there,” Kyle Schwarber said on Monday, as the Red Sox were still waiting to see if Martinez could play.

Without Martinez available, Schwarber was moved to DH on Tuesday night instead of having to play out of position at first base. Bobby Dalbec will be the first baseman against Gerrit Cole.
