Michael Chavis will start the 2021 season with the Worcester Red Sox after Boston picked him on Tuesday.
The infielder struggled at the end of spring training after completing six home runs in the first 18 games. Chavis has struck out eight goals in his last seven appearances. This decision opens a place for Christian Arroyo.
Manager Alex Cora revealed some reasoning behind the reason for going with Chavis on Tuesday, noting that he is happy that Chavis is upset because it will help him in the long run.
“There are a lot of circumstances that go into the decision, but one thing we love about Christian, he can play the shortstop,” Cora told reporters. “Michael, he’s made some progress. And I’m glad he was upset because that is part of it. No one is happy when they send you. But we’ve talked about a few things he needs to do to be the all-around hitter we know he can be. I think in the end he wasn’t in control of the strike zone. He was very aggressive in chasing throws out of the crease.
Chavis came on the scene in 2019 for the Red Sox and provided a bright spot during a tough season with 18 home runs and 58 RBIs. It also provided plenty of entertainment during the shortened 2020 season.
The Red Sox begin a new campaign Thursday when they host the Baltimore Orioles at Fenway Park.
