Just a day after returning from the 10-day casualty list, Jesse winker returns to IL due to the same intercostal tension that sidelined him for over a month. The Reds have announced that Winker and his fellow outfielder Shogo Akiyama were placed on the 10-day IL, with Akiyama suffering from strain in his right hamstrings. The two open places will be filled by the flyer TJ Friedl (whose contract was selected from Triple-A), and right-hander Art warren, which was activated from the 60 day IL.
Winker was hit by a Brusdar graterol pitch in the eighth inning of last night’s 3-1 victory over the Dodgers, and had to be taken out of the game for a pinch runner. Responsible for reds David Bell indicated that the swing before the RAP may have been the cause of Winker’s re-aggravation, but whatever the cause, Winker will be running out of time again given this crucial part of the Reds’ season.
Given the timing, it’s certainly possible that Winker won’t play again in 2021. He will miss at least the next 10 days, and even if he is able to come back after that second intercostal issue, the Reds might not want to risk more. . injury if the team is already out of the playoff race. This is technically the third time Winker has been sidelined with this intercostal injury, as he missed a few games before his first stint in IL in an attempt to resolve the issue with some rest, before being again embarrassed during his return to action.
It’s a terrible break for Winker and the Reds, as Winker’s bat is one of the main reasons Cincinnati is even in the playoff race. Winker has 24 home runs and a .305 / .394 / .556 slash line on 485 home plate appearances, with a 151 wRC + that ranks fifth among all players with at least 450 AP.
Winker and Akiyama join Tyler naquin (bruised ribs) on the IL, leaving the Reds suddenly skinny in the outfield. Aristide Aquinas and Max Schrock served as a left campaign platoon in Winker’s absence, with Delino DeShields get some action with Naquin and Akiyama in the center field. With Akiyama now out, it opens the door for Friedl to make his Major League debut as the Reds play some of their most important games of the season.
Friedl joined the Reds as an undrafted free agent in 2016, and he’s worked his way through the system all the way to Triple-A this year, where he beat .264 / .357 / .422 with 12 circuits in 448 PA. Baseball America ranked Friedl 22nd on its mid-season list of the Cincinnati Farm System’s Top 30 Prospects. Friedl has experience in all three outfield positions and has spent most of his time in the middle, so he could essentially slide straight into Akiyama’s place as a left-handed hitting supplement to DeShields.
Warren’s return might also be no easy feat for a Reds reliever pen hungry for fresh weapons. Warren posted a 1.88 ERA in 14 1/3 innings before being placed on the injured list due to oblique tension on July 15. The right-hander has posted large numbers of strikeouts since the start of the 2018 minor league season, which gave him a brief glimpse of the Mariners’ roster in the 2019 season. The Rangers claimed Warren from the Mariners after the last season, and Cincinnati then acquired Warren in a trade with Texas last January.
