Reese Witherspoon is not quite ready to be an empty breeder.

The Oscar-winning actress revealed Monday in the episode of "The Ellen DeGeneres Show" that she screamed when her eldest son left for college.

"It's weird when your kids go to college. It's tough, "said Witherspoon, speaking about his 19-year-old daughter Ava, who is finishing her first year. "… I may have been able to go to her empty room, lie on her bed and cry when she went to college."

The star of "Legally Blonde" and her ex-husband, Ryan Phillippe, are parents of Ava and her 15-year-old son Deacon. Witherspoon and her current husband, Jim Toth, have a son, Tennessee, 6 years old.

Although 43-year-old Witherspoon may have ended up in landfills after Ava left to go to school, she can be glad to know that the kids are coming home from college – including Ava. "She's coming back," she said. "Apparently, mothers here who had kids who went to college, they come back, right? I thought she'd be gone, but she'll come back.

The actress, who will return on the small screen next month in the second season of "Big Little Lies" HBO, was not one of these students to return. She went to college for a year before giving up because she had started landing roles in film, a career change that her mother had not accepted.

"My mother was so mad at me that I dropped out of school because she wanted me to be a doctor, especially a plastic surgeon," she told DeGeneres.

Witherspoon said that his mother had finally left his disappointment, largely thanks to his own selfless action.

"My mother was really determined that I would be a plastic surgeon," she said. "And she was crazy for probably about 10 years, then I bought her a house and she overcame it."
