Call it an official welcome.

Referee Kelly Sutherland spoke to the Pittsburgh Penguins and Philadelphia Flyers ahead of the 2021 NHL season opener Wednesday night at the Wells Fargo Center.

Sutherland’s remarks before dropping the puck into the empty arena were brief, but sincere.

“Gentlemen, we have all looked forward to this day with enthusiasm,” said Sutherland. “Welcome to the start of the 2021 NHL season. Best wishes to all of you. Stay safe, stay healthy. Let’s have a good battle.”

The NHL season will feature 56 games with the regular season should end on May 8.
