Regnery Publishing, a conservative publishing house, said Monday it recovered a book from Republican Senator Josh Hawley of Missouri after Simon & Schuster terminated their publishing contract following the assault on the Capitol.
Mr Hawley had been criticized for disputing the results of President-elect Joseph R. Biden Jr.’s victory and was accused of helping incite the crowd that stormed the Capitol on January 6. His book, “The Tyranny of Big Tech,” is scheduled for release this spring, Regnery said.
Thomas Spence, president and publisher of Regnery, said in a statement that the publishing house was proud to stand alongside Mr Hawley. “The warning in his book on censorship obviously couldn’t be more urgent,” Mr. Spence said. His company’s statement said Simon & Schuster made Mr Hawley a victim of the cancellation culture.
Most major publishers, including Simon & Schuster, one of the “Big Five” of the United States, publish books across the political spectrum. But Simon & Schuster said it canceled plans to publish Mr Hawley’s book after the Capitol siege.
“As a publisher, our mission will always be to amplify a variety of voices and viewpoints: at the same time, we take our broader public responsibility seriously. as citizens, and cannot support Senator Hawley after his role in what has become a dangerous threat, ”Simon & Schuster said in a statement. The company did not immediately respond to a request for comment on Regnery’s accusations.
After his book was dropped, Mr. Hawley described him as “Orwellian”.
“Simon & Schuster is canceling my contract because I represented my constituents, leading a Senate debate on voter integrity, which they have now decided to redefine as sedition,” he wrote in a message.
In recent years, Regnery’s best-selling writers have included Ann Coulter, the conservative expert, and Republican Senator Ted Cruz from Texas. Mr. Hawley’s book deals with tech companies like Google, Facebook, and Amazon and their political influence.
