Sources say Warner Bros. has an eye on Tom Holland or Timothée Chalamet to play the eccentric chocolatier.
For nearly five years, Warner Bros. has been developing a new Willy Wonka film that will explore the character’s early days, before he became the Candy King, and today the studio announced its release. Wonka March 17, 2023.
In 2018, Collider reported that Ryan gosling, Donald glover and Ezra Miller were in the eye, but those names have all fallen by the wayside since then. Lately sources say Warners has his eye on either Tom holland or Timothée Chalamet play the eccentric confectioner.
Holland is currently 24, while Chalamet just turned 25, and not only will they be competing for roles for years to come, but they are two of the most recognizable and talented men under 30. from Hollywood. actively pursuing this part, it is easy to see Chalamet as a younger version of Johnny deppWonka’s vision, as Holland is more of a man of song and dance in the vein of a youth Gene Wilder. To be clear, the role of Wonka hasn’t been offered either – but let’s be honest, there is only a limited number of young actors that Warner Bros. would agree to fund this movie with, as I imagine that they want him to trigger a franchise.
Paul King (Paddington) will direct from a script by Simon rich (An American pickle), which will be inspired by Roald dahlclassic children’s novel Charlie and the chocolate factory. Wonka will be produced by David Heyman, which also produced the Harry potter films for Warners in addition to Paddington and its equally beloved sequel. Variety reports that the studio plans to begin production within the next four months.
While I’m not aware of Holland’s inner workings or Chalamet’s schedules, neither of the two seem to have any plans to start filming this summer. Chalamet is committed to playing Bob dylan in James mangoldof Switch to electricity, but Mangold is currently focusing on the fifth Indiana Jones film scheduled for July 2022. Holland is currently shooting a third Spider Man movie, but he has no other upcoming projects on his IMDb page.
Route details for Wonka are being kept under wraps, and since it’s sort of an origin story, it’s unclear if the Oompa Loompas will make an appearance. However, given King’s experience with the computer-generated character of Paddington, it’s possible the Oompa Loompas were CGs as well. You can expect the chocolatier’s hardworking assistants to appear in at least one of the two animated series that Netflix is developing with. Taika Waititi, which itself would make an excellent Wonka, if you ask me. Too bad he’s a little busy at the moment …
